Hexion Bunbury Plant History

Established in the mid-1980s, the Bunbury plant has played a key role in supplying formaldehyde resins and chemical solutions to Western Australia’s industrial sector — evolving through decades of innovation, joint ventures, and industry change.

  • Construction of the Dardanup West Formaldehyde Resin plant started in February 1985 and the site officially opened in April 1987.
  • The business was set up a 50/50 Joint Venture between Dyno Chemical Group (Norway) and Wesfi. Laminex acquired Wesfi and its share in the Joint Venture in 2001.
  • The primary purpose of the site was to provide Formaldehyde Resin to the Laminex Australia (formerly Wesfi) particle board plant located adjacent to the site.
  • In May 1996 a contract Tolling agreement was signed to manufacture Flocculant for various local industries.  An additional tolling plant was added to provide capability and capacity to manufacture these Flocculants and other chemicals.
  • Swedish PE group Industri Kapital acquired Dyno Group in the year 2000. Dyno was de-listed and merged with Neste Chemicals to form the Dynea group.
  • Momentive Specialty Chemicals Pty Ltd purchased Dynea’s 50% shareholding in January 2013. Laminex Australia continued to own the remaining 50%. Following the change in ownership the business was renamed Momentive Specialty Chemicals Australia Pty Ltd this was then changed again to Hexion Australia Pty Ltd in 2015.
